the trip [Nov. 23rd, 2006|03:45 pm]
Happy thanksgiving. Tomorrow Lance and I are leaving on our big adventure. We've been in Florida staying with his family while getting ready for the trip. We're sea kayaking from Mexico to Maine (actually South Padre Island, Texas to Maine). It is as close to the border as we can start. The whole thing should take about 6 months but I have a few weddings we're taking a break for along the way. We have had quite a lot of luck with sponsors for the trip. A lot of outdoor companies such as Kokatat, Eagles Nest, NRS, Native, North Water, and many more have given us free gear in exchange for lifestyle pictures of us wearing the gear. Anyway, we are super excited and a bit nervous! It'll take 2 days to drive to Texas and then we head out on Sunday...rain expected a couple days later. Well be camping the whole time wherever we find spots but we may treat ourselves to a hotel on Christmas. We'll be stopping by sea-side towns every 1-2 weeks. If anybody is interested in where we are check out our website at www.kayakjourneys.com where we'll be posting updates and photos along the way.

Living in a 13 ft scamp camper trailer with lance has been quite the experience this summer. I've learned how to consolidate everything i own into a few compartments. The cape carteret campground, space #10 is my address. There is a two week limit but the owner has been nice in leting us stay longer. Geez I sound like such a scamp tramp trailer crazo. Met some interesting folks and are saving $. One lady started showing me her camper and pulled out her photo album....i got to see her principal's house in pennsylvania....yep. I've been working on my wedding and portrait business and trying to get my name out. And it is working! Yesterday i booked a wedding for January 6th. The bride saw me online (www.tracyturpen.com) and said she had to have me if i was available. It was flattering, hopefully it'll take off. Even if it does I may not have time for it though. Lance and I are taking a 5-6 month kayaking trip starting this November. We are sea kayaking from the gulf of mexico up to maine. We are stopping a couple times so I can do weddings, but then getting back on the route. Check it out at www.kayakjourneys.com. I'm excited, I just need to train a bit more before the trip and order some gear, Lance has most of his. I'm doing a may wedding for Lance's boss's daughter and hopefully trading a nice kayak for the photography. bartering is pretty cool. I hang out a lot in this little internet cafe called beans-n-screens, it's raining outside getting ready for the tropical storm/possible hurricane. I've never been in a hurricane, but always wanted to. Here is my chance I guess, although leaving tomorrow for chapel hill to go to boone to photograph a bat mitzvah at a church and the hound ears swimming pool. It's a hollywood theme for a 13 year old girl, should be kinda fun. Then sunday going to asheville to do an informal first premier of the movie i made (Life as a Canvas, 54 min 52 sec long). Pool party and potluck. Hope it is a hit. Entered it in the Asheville film festival and Sundance. I'm drinking hot chocolate at the cafe but it is too sweet. I'm going back to my green tea frappes.

The Dickens family at Christmas is always a good time. Ralph, Charlene, Tom, Dolly, Frankie, Grandma, Nat, and even Claire.

They wore me out.
I think I'm going to take a nap.

i can't believe what happened last night [Apr. 5th, 2006|09:39 am]
I got this phone call last night about 11:00. At first I thought it was a prank call because the voice on the other end sounded so...odd. But after listening closer I realized who it was.

His name was Eric, one of the guys I made out with in Costa Rica 2 years ago. I was astounded that he kept my number this long!! He is still working and fishing, hanging out on the peninsula of Bahia Drake. It was a little hard to communicate over the phone (not much has changed since I last was there-haha) because of the broken english and my lack of spanish skills. But I got the general drift, he said he had been thinking about me and appologized for the length of time that had gone by.

So random!!!

I went to the Outer Banks this weekend with Lance. It was my first overnight sea kayaking trip. Boy was it cold! But a ton of fun. We caught this sweet sunset right when we pulled up to cape lookout to set up camp. The trip was cut short one day because the weather was supposed to get really bad-- rain, cold, wind. We didn't want to paddle in it the next morning so we stayed with his friend John in Greenville.

Everyone come to the Looking Glass Gallery during the month of march! The ASU art committee agreed to let me put up a show of my New Zealand work. I had to custom order frames, mats, foam backing, and all kinds of stuff. But it's worth it. I'm staring at 10 completed frames right now. It starts March 6th and runs til the end of the month. Sometime there is a reception. I'll post when I'm sure of the exact date.

I have to get ready to give a 45 minute presentation tonight ewwwwww. I was supposed to go last week but the slack teacher never showed up.

Ciao!

Gosh I haven't updated in a long time.

Hawaii was fun, it was great to see my Dad and his spirited new girlfriend. They counterbalance each other very well. We drove through all kinds of unspoiled land in the back of his truck and saw some amazing sights.

It's kind of nice being a part-time senior. I have one class that meets on monday and then my internship. Yet I still feel busier than I thought I would. The people I work with I like a lot. And I have my first wedding to shoot on June 17th, hopefully I'll feel capable by then.

I need to get outside and exercise. I miss summertime.

a terribly attractive entry [Dec. 6th, 2005|12:39 pm]
I am pretty tired. Yesterday I went with Todd to shoot a really ritzy house in Elk River Falls, this guarded community. The lady who owns it has been remodeling it for 3 years, it's crazy. Her other house is in Palm Beach and is considered more ornate than the Biltmore House if you can believe it. It's amazing to see how some people live. But I assisted Todd for 8 hours, learned a lot about shooting interiors. Then I went to my product class right after that where we were shooting models for practice. Haircut 101 supplied them so the studio had on a bunch of loud music and the class took turns shooting the girls. Ahhhhhh photography all day!

About to go to my last class of the semester....

Next tuesday everyone is invited to watch Us Uncut at Greenbriar at 3:00!
My class for documentary is meeting there to watch our final videos, and friends are welcome. So please come! You just may see yourself ;)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING [Nov. 23rd, 2005|09:18 pm]
Guess what? I got an internship!!!! Next semester, or sooner, I'll be working for Todd Bush in Banner Elk. He is a pretty well known photographer in the area and photographs a variety of subjects. And even better....I'll be getting paid! When he found out I was only taking one other class next semester he said I could work full time...I had e-mailed him just inquiring and sent him a link to my website. He said my images were terrific and agreed to meet with me. He is really nice, funny and eccentric! Should be fun.

Crunch time for the documentary with Sarah....We've decided to call it "Us Uncut." Lots to do but looking good.

I'm at home right now, just drove in from Boone. No snow here! It was really pretty on the parkway the other day...looked like fucking Narnia.

Georgia times [Nov. 16th, 2005|10:11 am]
I had the best weekend! Lance and I went down to Tybee Island in Georgia and spent 3 days there. The weather was so warm and sunny and we camped on the beach... We did some sea kaying in the ocean and through the marshes. I actually rolled on both sides! My pool practicing with that paid off. Lots of fun with amazing sunsets.

He is there all week doing his ACA certification. Then I have to drive back down Saturday and pick him up. I think Sarah is coming with me to keep me company. The drive is really long when you are by yourself!

I'm trying to put together a show of New Zealand work for the Looking Glass Gallery right now. They are accepting submissions that have a related body of work.

I get to hang out with my best NZ friend tonight.....the one and only Katie Richards! YaY.

Ode to LJ [Nov. 6th, 2005|08:40 pm]
Suffering through another football game on tv while getting my cuddle time in.

However, I am also searching for an internship next semester. Neighbors cut me off their wireless so I found another one to steal.

Next weekend I'm going kayaking in Georgia!!! Lance has a certification program so I'm dropping him off and picking him up a week later. We're going to camp and be chyral before it and after.

I really like vegetables. And I'd like to plant some papaya trees. And a lime tree.

Cherry coke is better than real coke if I had to choose. I don't even like coke.

tunnels are neat.

The Refreshing Adventures of Us- due in a month. Get ready for that premiere. If you dare to watch the antics of Sarah and I. By the way. we are still taking awesome interviews!!

Ok- Aloha!

Happy Halloween [Oct. 31st, 2005|05:01 pm]
To back up Lila and Jenna's lingerie shoot went fabulously. Those girls are wicked HOT!

I am currently looking for an internship for next semester. It can be anywhere I want as long as I take my one other class independently...so close to graduating. Not that it matters since I do not know what I am doing yet...

Living with Lance is going really well. He got a job at Footsloggers practically the first week he was here and since then has been doing that and helping out with the roll clinics at ASU. He has been teaching me how to do a sweep roll. It's coming along really well!

Happy Halloweeeeen....Laura and I are having a SpOOOKy dinner party tonight! Come in costume and bring a dish!

Mruahahahaha

I'm really tired. But I love having a 2 day week this week. Rock on you awesome week. Gotta shoot in the studio this weekend...then have to do a lingerie shoot sometime in the future.

Ladies???

This year is going by crazy fast. Still trying to fit in time to work on Life as a Canvas. It's never going to end....but if it does it'll be quality madness.
